Hoje vamos bater um papo com João Pedro sobre o Theremin, um instrumento musical pra lá de anti-convencional . João participou dos álbuns "Dágua", "Dágua ao vivo " e "Side Effects" , na faixa "Egodrome"
1 – FALE SOBRE VOCÊ:
-Sou formado em Jornalismo e em Letras, e já há algum tempo trabalho na área de Educação com tecnologias digitais. A música sempre me fascinou desde criança: minha mãe toca piano e acordeão, e meu pai era colecionador de discos de vinil. Então, dentro de casa a música sempre se fez presente nos seus mais diversos estilos.
Trabalhei em alguns jornais, e tive algumas bandas de rock autoral, como a Geral! e Radiokaos, que se apresentaram bastante no circuito alternativo do Rio de Janeiro durante os anos 90 e 2000, em que tocava baixo e compunha, com letras também inspiradas nas minhas influências literárias, como a Geração Beat, todo rol de poetas tidos como “malditos”, e a Tropicália.
2- COMO VOCÊ DESCOBRIU O THEREMIN?
-Na adolescência já havia assistido em VHS ao show The Song Remains the Same, do Led Zepellin, em que Jimmy Page faz uso do Theremin de uma única antena.
Aquela sonoridade inusitada me chamou a atenção na época, com aquele som todo saindo dos gestos das “mãos no ar” , sem ele tocar literalmente em nada.
Depois meio que esqueci desse instrumento, pois no geral não é muito comum ser usado na música que escutava. Só depois, bem mais tarde, quando precisei ajustar meu baixo na casa de um luthier, o Pedrone, vi um Theremin de perto pela primeira vez, e ele me fala que produzia o instrumento.
Resolvi então comprá-lo, um modelo bem simples, e acabei usando em algumas gravações da minha banda na época, a Radiokaos. Depois também usei em um projeto solo que gravei algumas músicas minhas, e resolvi chamar o Perim, que já conhecia através de amigos da banda, para participar no piano em “João e o Pé”. Depois ele me chama para colocar o instrumento no disco D’água, e desde então temos feito essa parceria, inclusive em shows. Hoje estou no meu segundo Theremin de uma antena a
esse sim um modelo idêntico ao usado pelo Jimmy Page.
3-FALE SOBRE A HISTÓRIA DO THEREMIN:
A história do Theremin é muito curiosa, e recomendo procurarem o documentário “Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey”, em que esmiúçam a história do instrumento e de seu inventor, o russo Léon Theremin.
O theremin é considerado o primeiro instrumento eletrônico já inventado,
antes do advento dos sintetizadores.
A invenção foi produto de pesquisa em torno de sensores e radares na Guerra Civil russa. Depois o inventor saiu em turnê pelos EUA, abrindo as possibilidades musicais para sua invenção, que patenteou em 1928. No final dos anos 30, ele volta para trabalhar em um laboratório na Sibéria em circunstâncias bastante misteriosas,
com algumas testemunhas afirmando que foi levado pela KGB à época.
Ele só reapareceria em público 30 anos depois, mas deixou discípulos virtuosos, como Clara Rockmore e outros, que fizeram uso orquestral do instrumento.
Robert Moog também investiu na produção do Theremin nos anos 50,
e que acabou sendo bastante usado em filmes de terror e de sci-fi,
pela sua sonoridade “fantasmagórica” e “espacial”.
Recentemente o interesse pelo instrumento cresceu novamente,
com toda essa questão da Internet e compartilhamento de informações via meios digitais.
4- VOCÊ PODE CITAR ALGUNS EXEMPLOS USO DO THEREMIN NA MÚSICA EM GERAL?
-Hoje podemos pesquisar diversos exemplos de uso do Theremin na música, mas que também não podem ser confundidos com sons de sintetizadores ou de outros instrumentos simuladores.
Caso clássico é o dos Beach Boys, que na verdade usam um outro, o Tannerin, em Good Vibrations. Além do Jimmy Page, temos o Pixies e Flamming Lips, e Rita Lee que usou na época dos Mutantes e em shows mais recentes.
Considero muito interessante também a utilização do instrumento em trilhas sonoras de filmes dos anos 50, a maioria feita por Samuel Hoffman, como o “O dia em que a terra parou” e “Quando fala o coração” (Spellbound), do Hitchcock.
Sua utilização em música clássica foi (e é) feita por pouquíssimos músicos no mundo,
como Clara Rockmore e Lydia Kavina, que participou da trilha do filme Ed Wood,
do Tim Burton. Ela também participa em discos de uma também inusitada banda de surf music russa, a Messer Chups, em que faz uso brilhante do instrumento.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOU:
-I graduated in Jornalism and literature, and I´ve been working for a good time in Education and digital Technology.
Music has atracted me since I was a child. My mother plays Piano and my father was a vinyl colector. So music was always present at home in a lot of different genres and styles.I worked in some newspapers, and played in some Rock bands such as Geral! and Radiokaos
active in the alternative scene in Rio de Janeiro during the 90´s and early 2000. I played bass e composed lyrics inspired by the Beat generation and Tropicalia and the so called "damned" poets.
HOW DID YOU KNOW THE THEREMIN?
-In my teen age i had already watched in VHS The Song Remains to the same,
from Led Zepellin, when Jimmy Page uses the Theremin with a single anthenna.
I was very impressed by that unusual sonority, with all those strange sounds comming out of his hands without really playing anything. After a while I forgot about it because it is not usually used in kind of music I was listening by that time.
Later on, when I need to have my Bass fixed by a Luthier, Pedrone, I saw a Theremin for the first time. He was building some units. I bought a simple one and started in some recordings with my band, Radiokaos and also in some new songs. That when I called Perim to play a piano in "João e o Pé" and he invited me to take part in "Dágua" . Since then we are working together. Today I use the same model of Theremin as Page.
TELL ME ABOUT THE STORY OF THEREMIN:
-The story of Theremin is very interesting and I recommend watching the documentary "Theremin:An electronic Odissey",about the instrument and its inventor, the Russian Léon Theremin. It is considered the first electronic instrument way before the sintesizers. It was the result of scientific researchs on sensors and radars during the Russian civil war.
After That, Léon Theremin went on a turnéé in the United States, opening new musical possibilities for his invention, witch was legally patented in 1928. In the late 30´s he returned working for a laboratory in Siberia. Some rummors says he was kept away by KGB by time reurning only 30 years after.
He had left several musical disciples such as Clara Rockmore who made an orchestral use of the instrument.
Bob Moog also invested in the production of the Theremin in the 50´s
d it turned to be used in several terror and Sci-Fi movies by its "Haunted" and "Spooky" sonority. Recently the interest in the instrument has increased due to the web facilities.
CAN YOU GIVE US SOME EXAMPLES OF THE USE OF THE THEREMIN IN MUSIC?
-Nowadays we can find several examples for the use of Theremin in music,
but it should not be confused with sounds produced by synthesizers and others simulators.
One classic example is the Beach Boys in Good Vibrations, althought they used a
similar model, the Tannerin. Besides Jimmy Page, we have also Pixies and Flaming lips.
Here in Brazil we had Rita Lee who used to play Theremin in the Mutantes.
I think it is very interesting the use f the theremin in soundtracks in the 50-´s most of them made by Samuel Hofmann in films such as "Spellbound" from Alfred Hitchcock and ".The day th earth stood still"
In Classical music there are few artists that uses the instrument, especially the afore -mentioned Clara Rockmore and Lydia Kavina, who worked in the soundtrack of the movie Ed Wood, from Tim Burton. She also takes part in the recordings of an unusual russian surf band Messer Chups.
