Apesar de ser considerado um instrumento de teclado, os sintetizadores tiveram sua origem em módulos geradores de som. Basicamente, um sintetizador é composto de osciladores (que geram o som) e filtros (que alteram o som). Nos módulos essa combinação podiam resultar em uma quantidade gigantesca de fios e controles.
O instrumento está ligado diretamente à origem da música eletrônica no trabalho de compositores como Stockhausen, Ligetti, Berio, entre outros.
Despite being considered a keyboard instrument, synthesizers originated in sound generating modules. Basically, a synthesizer is made up of oscillators (which generate the sound) and filters (which alter the sound). In the modules, this combination could result in a huge amount of wires and controls. The instrument is directly linked to the origin of electronic music in the work of composers such as Stockhausen, Ligetti, Berio, among others.
A partir da influência desses pioneiros da música eletrônica, músicos mais ligados ao rock e à música popular experimental passaram a adotar o instrumento. Uma banda que está associada diretamente ao uso dos sintetizadores modulares é a Tangerine Dream.
Under the influence of these pioneers of electronic music, musicians more connected to rock and experimental popular music started to adopt the instrument.
One band that is directly associated to the use of modular synths is Tangerine Dream.
Basicamente duas grandes marcas estiveram associadas à fabricação de sintetizadores modulares : Moog e Buchla. O Moog ganhou muita visibilidade graças ao modelo utilizado por Keith Emerson do grupo Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
Já o modelo AMS , por sua vez foi uma grande evolução que trouxe a facilidade de ser portátil. Vinha dentro de uma maleta de madeira. Seu som ficou consagrado no mundo do rock a partir da utilização do Pink Floyd nas músicas "On the run" do àlbum "The Dark Side of The Moon" e "Welcome to the Machine" do "Wish You Were here"
Basically two major brands were associated with the manufacture of modular synthesizers: Moog and Buchla. The Moog gained a lot of visibility thanks to the model used by Keith Emerson of the Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
The AMS was a major evolution that brought the facility of being portable. It came in a wooden case. Its sound was know in the rock world by the use by Pink Floyd in the songs "On the run" from the album "The Dark Side of The Moon" and "Welcome to the Machine" from "Wish You Were here"
A maior combinação de sintetizadores modulares é o TONTO- Sigla para "The Original New Timbral Orquestra" (A Orquestra Original de Novos Timbres), utilizado por diversos músicos, incluindo o trabalho de Stevie Wonder em diversos álbuns da década de 70.
Curiosamente , o instrumento também foi utilizado no filme "O Fantasma no Paraíso" de Brian de Palma (1974). Atualmente o modelo está exposto no National Music Center na cidade de Calgary, no Canadá.
The biggest combination of modular synthesizers is the TONTO-Acronym for "The Original New Timbral Orquestra", used by several musicians, including the work of Stevie Wonder on several albums from the 70s. Interestingly, the instrument was also used in the film "Ghost in Paradise" by Brian de Palma (1974). The model is currently on display at the National Music Center in Calgary, Canada.
Com o tempo os sintetizadores modulares foram substituídos por modelos portáteis e sequenciadores mas o conceito foi mantido. Bandas como o Kraftwerk ampliaram o mundo do rock informações que eram restritas à música experimental. O produtor italiano Giorgio Moroder a partir da gravação de "I Fell Love" de Donna Summer abriu as portas para a música eletrônica dançante que seria produzida 20 anos depois.
O lançamento durante a década de 90 do modelo Eurorack trouxe um renascimento do interesse pelo uso de sintetizadores modulares. Hoje existe uma cena forte de trabalhos de música eletrônica com uma forte tradição feminina marcada por nomes como Suzanne Ciani, Éliane Radigue, Laurie Spiegel, etc...
Os módulos virtuais também se tornaram uma opção bem mais acessível e ajudou muito na produção de trabalhos recentes na musica eletrônica. O meu projeto "Efeitos Colaterais/Side Effects" produzido diretamente dentro de um hospital (ver link) foi gerado unicamente com módulos virtuais (mais especificamente o Propellehead Reason).

Virtual modules have also become a much more accessible option and helped a lot in the production of recent works in electronic music.
