Hoje vamos falar de bandas e artistas que fizeram adaptações de músicas do repertório erudito.
Muitas vezes o rock progressivo é quase considerado como sinônimo de influências clássicas, o que é uma visão bem reducionista. Existem muitos mais elementos nessa mistura, mas não deixa de ser verdade que muitos grupos fizeram grandes adaptações de composições eruditas.
Today we are going to talk about bands and artists who have adapted music from the classical repertoire. Progressive rock is often considered synonymous with classical influences, which is a very reductionist view. There are many more elements in this mix, but it is still true that many groups have made major adaptations of classical compositions.
Nossa história começa com o tecladista Keith Emerson que junto com o grupo "The Nice" que realizou as primeiras experiências nesse sentido, inspiradas no músico frances Jacques Loussier que fazia adaptações jazzísticas de Bach. Mais especificamente com um versão pesada e bem agressiva de "America" do musical "West side story" composta por Leonard Bernstein. A banda durou apenas 3 anos (de 1967 até 1970) e também interpretou composições de Sibelius (Karelia suite) e de Bach (concertos de Bradenburgo).
Our story begins with keyboardist Keith Emerson who, together with the group "The Nice", carried out the first experiments in this direction, inspired by the French musician Jacques Loussier who made jazz adaptations of Bach. More specifically with a heavy and very aggressive version of "America" from the musical "West side story" composed by Leonard Bernstein. The band lasted only 3 years (from 1967 to 1970) and also performed compositions by Sibelius (Karelia suite) and Bach (Bradenburg Concerts).
Emerson largou o The Nice para formar aquele que seria o mais exagerado e megalômano grupo de toda a história do rock: O trio Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Logo em sua estréia, no festival da ilha de wright apresentaram uma versão de "Pictures at an exhibition" the Modest Mussorgsky.
Emerson left The Nice to form what would be the most exaggerated and megalomaniacal group in all of rock history: The trio Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Soon on their debut, at the Wright's Island festival they presented a version of "Pictures at an exhibition" the Modest Mussorgsky.
Ao longo de sua carreira a banda fez adaptações de obras de Bach, Janácek, Copland, Ginastera, Prokofiev, entre outros além de diversas outras peças que foram inspiradas por diversos compositores eruditos.
Throughout their career the band made adaptations of works by Bach, Janácek, Copland, Ginastera, Prokofiev, among others besides several other pieces that were inspired by several classical composers.
Outras bandas seguiram essa trilha de forma menos ostensiva mas com resultados bem interessante como, por exemplo, a inglesa Egg e a Holandesa Trace. Jethro Tull obteve uma boa recepção com Buréé, adaptação de Bach.
Other bands followed this trail in a less ostentatious way but with very interesting results such as the English Egg and the Dutch Trace. Jethro Tull got a good reception with Buréé, adapted from Bach.
Em pouco tempo, citações clássicas viraram quase um ítem obrigatório em números solos de tecladistas, não somente em grupos progressivos. A citação de Bach de John Lord no Deep Puple se tornou extremamente popular assim como as intervenções de Rick Wakeman no Yes repletas de trechos extraidos de peças eruditas. Com o tempo a idéia vulgarizou se tornando redundante e cansativa.
In a short time, classic quotations became almost a mandatory item in solo keyboardist numbers, not just in progressive groups. John Lord's Bach quote on Deep Puple has become extremely popular as Rick Wakeman's interventions on Yes full of excerpts from classical themes. Soon, the idea started to become redundant and boring.
Fora do Rock Progressivo cabe destacar além do já mencionado Jacques Lussier, Isao Tomita que construiu uma carreira intera baseada na recriação eletrônica de obras de Mussogsky, Debussy, Ravel, Host, entre outros.
Out of Prog Rock, it is worth mentioning Jacques Lussier, Isao Tomita who built his whole career based on the recreation of works by Mussogsky, Debussy, Ravel, Host, among others.
No Brasil temos alguns exemplos. A banda UAKTI fez um disco inteiro dedicado à reinterpretação de clássicos. Egberto Gismonti revisitou Villa Lobos com uma roupagem eletrônica e a Banda Bacamarte na década de 80 apresentava em seus shows uma adaptação de um dos estudos para violão de Villa Lobos. No entanto não é uma prática muito comum, possivelmente devido aos altos custos de edição e direitos autorais.
In Brazil we have some examples. The band UAKTI made an entire album dedicated to the reinterpretation of classics. Egberto Gismonti revisited Villa Lobos with an electronic outfit and Banda Bacamarte in the 80's presented in their shows an adaptation of one of Villa Lobos' guitar studies. However, it is not a very common practice, possibly due to high editing and copyright costs.
