O Mellotron é um instrumento de teclado inventado na década de 60, e pode ser considerado o avô dos samplers. Basicamente o aparelho se baseava numa série de fitas com amostras de gravação de timbres de cordas, corais, flautas, etc...

O primeiro músico a utilizar o Mellotron no Rock foi o inglês Graham Bond mas o instrumento se popularizou através da introdução de "Strawberry Fields" dos Beatles. Logo depois grupos como o Moody Blues e King Crimson adotaram o seu uso.
The first musician to use Mellotron in Rock was the English singer Graham Bond but the instrument became popular through the introduction of the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields". Soon after groups such as Moody Blues and King Crimson adopted its use.
O Mellotron se tornou quase um sinônimo de Rock Progressivo. Pelo menos duas grandes bandas tiveram sua produção inicial diretamente relacionado a esse instrumento: O já citado King Crimson (Na sua primeira fase) e Genesis (Fase Peter Gabriel e nos primeiros discos com Phill Collins no vocal). Outras bandas como Yes, Camel também usaram o instrumento em gravações.
Mellotron has become almost synonymous of Prog Rock. At least two major bands had their initial production directly related to this instrument: The aforementioned King Crimson (In its first phase) and Genesis (Peter Gabriel phase and on the first albums with Phill Collins on vocals). Other bands such as Yes, Camel also used the instrument on recordings.
Altamente influenciado pelo som inicial do Genesis, o Progressivo Italiano adotou o som do Mellotron, principalmente nos trabalhos de Premiatta Forneria Marconi, Le Orme e Museu Rosembach.
Highly influenced by the early sound of Genesis, the Italian Progressive adopted the sound of mellotron, mainly in the works of Premiatta Forneria Marconi, Le Orme and Rosembach Museum.
Fora do mundo progressivo, mas não muito distante, David Bowie o utilizou em "Space Oditty". John Paul Jones, que além de baixista do Led Zeppelin era um excelente tecladista e arranjador usou o instrumento de forma magistral nas clássicas "Stairway to Heaven", "Kashmyr" e "The Rain Song".
Out of the prog world but not so far, David Bowie used it in "Space Oditty". John Paul Jones, besides being Led Zeppelin bassist was an excellent keyboardist and arranger and used the instrument masterfully in the classics "Stairway to Heaven", "Kashmyr" and "The Rain Song".
Com o progresso dos sintetizadores, o Mellotron se tornou um instrumento pesado e obsoleto, mas seu conceito foi recuperado vinte anos depois com o advento dos Samplers. Mais recentemente, com a busca por sons vintages, bandas como o Radiohead redescobriram o instrumento.
With the development of modern synthesizers, the Mellotron became a heavy and obsolete instrument, but its concept was recovered twenty years later with the advent of samplers. More recently, with the search for vintage sounds, bands such as Radiohead have rediscovered the instrument.
No Brasil, um grande uso do Mellotron está na música "Mande Um Abraço pra Velha" dos Mutantes quando o grupo fazia a transição do som psicodélico para o progressivo.
In Brazil, a great use of Mellotron is in the song "Mande um Abraço pra Velha" from the Os Mutantes when the group made the transition from psychedelic to progressive sound.
