The MediSouP Community is a community in-development by researchers and artists, with an interest on the soundscapes of the Mediterranean areas and their political and cultural extensions and significations. The community wishes to bring together research and/or artistic collective projects, which expose the importance, similarities and varieties of regions across the mediterranean sea, and are into but not limited to the wide aspects of Sound Politics, Music, Space, Place and so forth.
Aim of the community is to create a connection amongst regions and develop cross-cultural collaborations between researchers and artists with a common interest on sound. MediSouP is based on the creation of a horizontal network around (not exclusively) Mediterranean sound art/scapes, without strict institutional frames.
Manifesto
This manifesto claims that the study of sound is important to society, and should be continuously implemented regardless of- / and in combination with- any world conditions. Sound acquires transgressive properties and communicates ideas, notions, feelings and whatever can or cannot be told in verbal communication. Thus, it appears crucial that we comprehend and interact with its properties and dynamics, and use this knowledge and interaction to the society’s benefit.
The Mediterranean historical foundations are the cradle of Western Civilisation and the whole region forms a boiling point consisting of a hotchpotch of diverse cultures who speak different languages, have different spiritual practices and political perspectives. Rich in folklore elements and musical heritage, the area demonstrates geographical landscape variations and similarities. More importantly, trade and war, peace and negotiation are elements that are still present in this region, rich in a social and cultural context.
The contemporary era challenges the identity of the people of the region, also in relation to the sounds they are exposed to. Today that people travel, migrate and raise borders, sound waves circulate and reach their ears without making any discriminations.
Now, more than ever, in the post-image era, the importance and use of sound needs to be elevated and combined with other contexts, concepts and notions.
It is the artists’ and researchers’ duty to further expand knowledge and creative use of sound to promote not only art and culture, but also well-being, environmental solutions, policy making, and last but not least, social change.
I hereby agree with the MediSouP Manifesto, and by becoming a member of the community, I declare that I endorse the above protocol and I am going to promote the realization in my own context to the full of my capabilities.
A Comunidade MediSouP é uma comunidade em desenvolvimento por investigadores e artistas, com interesse nas paisagens sonoras das áreas mediterrânicas e nas suas extensões e significados políticos e culturais. A comunidade pretende reunir projectos colectivos de investigação e/ou artísticos, que exponham a importância, semelhanças e variedades das regiões do mar Mediterrâneo, e que se limitem, mas não se limitem, aos aspectos amplos da Política Sonora, Música, Espaço, Lugar e assim por diante. adiante.
O objetivo da comunidade é criar uma ligação entre regiões e desenvolver colaborações interculturais entre investigadores e artistas com um interesse comum no som. Este manifesto afirma que o estudo do som é importante para a sociedade e deve ser continuamente implementado independentemente de - e em combinação com - quaisquer condições mundiais. O som adquire propriedades transgressoras e comunica ideias, noções, sentimentos e tudo o que pode ou não ser dito na comunicação verbal. Assim, parece crucial que compreendamos e interajamos com as suas propriedades e dinâmicas, e utilizemos esse conhecimento e interação em benefício da sociedade.
Os fundamentos históricos do Mediterrâneo são o berço da civilização ocidental e toda a região forma um ponto de ebulição que consiste numa miscelânea de diversas culturas que falam línguas diferentes, têm práticas espirituais e perspectivas políticas diferentes. Rica em elementos folclóricos e patrimônio musical, a área apresenta variações e semelhanças geográficas na paisagem. Mais importante ainda, o comércio e a guerra, a paz e a negociação são elementos que ainda estão presentes nesta região, rica num contexto social e cultural.
A era contemporânea desafia a identidade das gentes da região, também em relação aos sons a que estão expostas. Hoje que as pessoas viajam, migram e levantam fronteiras, as ondas sonoras circulam e chegam aos seus ouvidos sem fazer qualquer discriminação.
Agora, mais do que nunca, na era pós-imagem, a importância e a utilização do som precisam de ser elevadas e combinadas com outros contextos, conceitos e noções.
É dever dos artistas e investigadores expandir ainda mais o conhecimento e a utilização criativa do som para promover não só a arte e a cultura, mas também o bem-estar, as soluções ambientais, a elaboração de políticas e, por último, mas não menos importante, a mudança social.
Por meio deste, concordo com o Manifesto MediSouP e, ao me tornar membro da comunidade, declaro que endosso o protocolo acima e vou promover a realização em meu próprio contexto, ao máximo de minhas capacidades.
Para a 3ª edição do Festival MediSoup, compositores e som
artistas enviaram trabalhos em resposta ao tema deste ano, ‘Standing.
Paisagens Sonoras de Resistência.’ Os artistas foram encorajados a contemplar os desafios prevalecentes do nosso tempo: conflitos persistentes, guerras contínuas, violência desenfreada, a opressão sistemática, as violações dos direitos humanos, a
ascensão do nacionalismo e do extremismo, crise climática, destruição ecológica, e uma desorientação da moralidade e da ética. Guiado pela noção de “permanecendo e resistindo”, os artistas foram levados a explorar como sua arte poderia servir como um meio de protestar, abordar, refletir, discutir, expressar, comunicar, sugerir e imaginar em resposta ao
rumos destrutivos e desorientadores que o mundo tomou.
Após avaliação criteriosa, foi feita uma seleção dos trabalhos com base em sua ressonância musical, estética e conceitual com o tema do festival.
Posteriormente foi elaborado um programa com curadoria composto por cinco concertos cada um focando em trabalhos que exploram diferentes facetas do tema.
O Concerto 1 aprofunda o tema ‘Natureza’, contemplando a sua transformação em uma memória, uma impressão e uma entidade ameaçada.
O Concerto 2 imagina uma postura de ‘Metaresistência’ onde o ruído e a atenção ouvir tornam-se ferramentas de resistência, lembrando-nos que sem
ouvindo, não podemos evitar a chegada de ‘Nemesis’.
Concerto 3, ‘Delights de Chipre,’ celebra as perspectivas artísticas dos compositores cipriotas de diferentes gerações, oferecendo insights da ilha dividida de Chipre.
O Concerto 4, ‘Fight or Not’, apresenta reflexões sobre o destrutivo
força das guerras juntamente com visões de coexistência pacífica.
Finalmente, Concerto 5, ‘Against all Odds’, traz obras que se transformam em protestos contra a polícia brutalidade, repressão social, gentrificação, violência política de extrema direita, e violência contra povos indígenasFor the 3rd edition of the MediSoup Festival, composers and sound artists submitted works in response to this year’s theme, ‘Standing. Soundscapes of Resistance.’ Artists were encouraged to contemplate the prevailing challenges of our time: persisting conflicts, ongoing wars, rampant violence, systematic oppression, human rights violations, the rise of nationalism and extremism, climate crisis, ecological destruction, and a disorientation of morality and ethics. Guided by the notion of ‘standing and resisting,’ artists were prompted to explore how their art could serve as a means to protest, address, reflect upon, discuss, express, communicate, suggest, and envision in response to the destructive and disorienting directions the world has taken. After careful evaluation, a selection of works was made based on their musical, aesthetic, and conceptual resonance with the festival's theme. Subsequently, a curated program comprising five concerts was crafted, each focusing on works that explore different facets of the theme.
Concert 1 delves into the theme of ‘Nature,’ contemplating its transformation into a memory, an impression, and an endangered entity.
Concert 2 imagines a ‘Metaresistance’ stance where noise and attentive listening become tools of resistance, reminding us that without listening, we cannot avoid the arrival of ‘Nemesis.’
Concert 3, ‘Delights from Cyprus,’ celebrates the artistic perspectives of Cypriot composers of different generations, offering insights from the divided island of Cyprus.
Concert 4, ‘Fight or Not,’ presents reflections on the destructive force of wars alongside visions of peaceful coexistence.
Finally, Concert 5, ‘Against all Odds,’ features works that become protests against police brutality, social repression, gentrification, far-right political violence, and violence against indigenous people
