O piano Rhodes foi inventado nos anos 40 por Harold Rhodes. Ao invés de usar cordas o Rhodes é um piano composto de tubos metálicos o que resulta em um som percussivo muito característico.
The Rhodes piano was invented in the 1940s by Harold Rhodes. Instead of using strings, Rhodes is a piano composed of metallic tubes which results in a very percussive characteristic sound.
Várias bandas de rock adotaram o instrumento cabendo destacar alguns trabalhos The Doors , Pink Floyd e Gentle Giant. Apesar de ter sido usado em grande escala no rock progressivo não chegou a ter a representatividade de um Mellotron e o Minimoog. Mesmo assim propiciou momentos fantásticos.

Onde ele ganhou maior representabilidade foi no Jazz-rock e no Funk.
Entre os destaques nessa área podemos citar Joe Zawinul do grupo Weather Report, Chick Corea e os brasileiros Azymuth, Marcos Valle e Eumir Deodato.
