Estou começando a gravar meu disco novo. Diferentemente do meu trabalho anterior completamente eletrônico neste vou incluir uma grande variedade de instrumentos acústicos étnicos.
Comecei com a marimba, convidado por João Pedro e Cláudia Andrade que possuem um instrumento originário de Moçambique.
Não tenho muita intimidade com a marimba, no entanto fiz , na década de 90, uma workshop de Timbila (um parente não muito distante) com o músico africano Matchume Zango. A oficina fazia parte de um projeto desenvolvido por Andre Sampaio (ex-Ponto de Equilíbrio) e foi realizado na Maracatu Brasil, onde estudei durante anos ritmos de Candomblé com Mestre Humberto (de quem falarei futuramente).
Traçar uma história da marimba é uma tarefa quase impossível uma vez que instrumento está espalhado por toda África com diferentes variações.
A Timbila por exemplo possui uma membrana vibratória que produz um som áspero que pode soar estranho para nossos ouvidos domesticados.
Outro parente, bem mais famoso é o Balafon, presente mais ao norte da África, e que foi tema de uma composição de Gilberto Gil no álbum "Refavela" (existe também uma versão em inglês no disco "NighTingale")
Saindo da África , a marimba encontrou um terreno fértil na América Central onde se tornou um instrumento fundamental em vários gêneros musicais.
Não devemos confundir os instrumentos de percussão de madeiras (xilofones) com os de metais (vibrafone, metalofone,glockenspiell,etc...) que apesar de terem o mesmo princípio diferem um pouco na sonoridade.

I am begining to record my new album.
Diferently from my previous work fully electronic now I am including several acustic ethnic instruments.
I started with the marimba, invited by João Pedro e Cláudia Andrade owners of a genuine instrument from Moçambique.
I am not very intimate with the marimba, however , in the 90's I went into a Timbila Workshop (a not-too-far marimba´s relative) with the african musician Matchume Zango. The workshop was part of a cultural exchange program between Brazil and Moçambique made by Andre Sampaio (ex-Ponto de Equilíbrio) at Maracatu Brasil, where I studied for several years the sacred rhythms of Candomblé com Mestre Humberto (more on this on further postings).
To draw a brief history of the marimba is an almost impossible task, since the instrument itself is spread all over the african continent with several variations.
The Timbila , for instance, has some kind of a vibrating menbrane producing a harsh sound that can be a little strange to ours domesticated ears.
Another relative, this one more famous , is the Balafon, most common in the north of África. For us, brazilians it became a little more popular due to the composition of Gilberto Gil in the 'Refavela" Album. (There is a english version of this song in " Nathingale" Album)
Going out of Africa , the marimba found a very fertile field in Central America. It became one of the most important instruments in several musical genres in that region.
We should not confuse wood percussion instruments (xilophones) with the ones made of metal (vibraphone, metalophone,glockenspiell,etc...) witch althought having the sharing the same principles differ a little bit in sonority.
